Ellora is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the
Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, India.
Ellora is one of the largest monastry-temple cave complexes in the world, featuring Hindu,Buddhist and
Jain monuments, dating back from 600-1000CE.
Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered,
pillaged and destroyed in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins.
There are over 100 caves at the site and cave 16 in particular, features the largest single monolithic
rock excavation in the world, the
Kailasha temple , a chariot shaped monument dedicated to Lord
Shiva.

temple Vitthala temple ,
Hazara Rama temple etc.
34 of the 100 caves at the site are open to public which includes Buddhist(12) , Hindu(17) AND 5 Jain
caves.
Hindu and Buddhist part of caves were built during Rashtrakuta dynasty, and Yadava dynasty, which
constructed a number of the Jain caves.
Cave 10 of most notable among Buddhist caves a chaitya worship hall called the
Vishvakarma cave,
built around 650 CE. Also known as carpenter's cave because the rock has been given a finish that has
the appearance of wooden beams.At the heart of this cave is a 15-foot statue of Buddha seated in a
preaching pose.
